LYON TOWNSHIP UPDATE

Giffels-Webster Engineers, Inc. is the engineering consultant for Lyon Township. As consulting engineers, we play a role in most construction projects that occur within the township. We review construction plans that are proposed by private developers, and design many of the sewer, water, and road projects that are constructed by the township. We have inspectors that observe the installation of all public and private water and sewer projects, and our survey department provides construction staking for almost all of the township projects. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about any project, public or private, please contact us by phone at 248-852-3100, or send an email to kchapa@giffelswebster.com.

For additional information regarding Lyon Township, please see their website at http://www.lyontwp.org.

For Benchmark details, see Lyon Township Section Map.

The following is a listing of some of the more significant public projects that Giffels-Webster is currently involved with:

Southwest Sanitary Sewer Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III
See Map of Phase I    See Map of Phase II    See Map of Phase III
Project Engineer—Leslie Zawada, P.E. (lzawada@giffelswebster.com)

Phase I of this project is complete.

Phase II - The sanitary sewer installation is complete. There are a number of restoration items that still need to be completed.

Phase III of this project involves a short portion of gravity sewer from 8 Mile Road to a new pump station (P.S. 8.0) located just north of 8 Mile Road on the east side of Pontiac Trail. A force main from the pump station will be constructed north along Pontiac Trail to 9 Mile Road where it will join another force main coming from just south of the City of South Lyon, along Pontiac Trail. The flow will be pumped east along the south side of 9 Mile Road by force main to the gravity sewer along Griswold Road. The gravity sewer on Griswold Road will run from approximately 2,500 feet north of 8 Mile Road and discharge to a Phase II gravity sewer located just north of 9 Mile Road. Construction has started and the project was completed in August 2008.

Huron Valley Trail Enhancement
See Map of Area
Project Engineer—Tina Vaglica, P.E. (tvaglica@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of widening approximately 3,000 feet of an existing 5-foot-wide path to a 10-foot-wide path in a Lyon Township community park. This will improve 19 path and roadway intersections beginning at 11 Mile Road and ending at Old Plank Road, and provide landscape screening along the Bramley Subdivision. Engineering plans have been sent to MDNR for approval.

Lyon Township Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion
Project Engineer—Tina Vaglica, P.E. (tvaglica@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of expanding the facility from the current rated capacity of 0.75 million gallons per day (mgd) to 2.5 mgd with the discharge being pumped to new infiltration beds south of 11 Mile Road and east of Milford Road. The Part 41 construction permit for the new west infiltration beds has been obtained, and construction of the west beds is targeted for late summer of 2009. The Basis of Design for the treatment plant and the Part 41 permit has been submitted to MDEQ and is being reviewed. The start of construction for the treatment plant expansion is targeted for early 2010 pending obtaining MDEQ permits.

West Grand River Roundabout
Project Engineer—Nikki Jeffries (njeffries@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of creating a roundabout at the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Lyon Center Drive, west of the Six Points intersection. The major construction items of the roundabout have been completed and it is currently open to vehicular traffic. The project will be completed this spring following the installation of colored concrete crosswalks and restoration items. Crosswalk construction will be taking place in May 2009. Expect land closures during this time.

Ten Mile Widening at Copperwood
Project Engineer—Nikki Jeffries (njeffries@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of widening approximately 1,800 feet of Ten Mile Road between Johns Road and Napier Road to create a center turn lane. Construction began September 15, 2008. Traffic will be maintained during construction, but will be reduced to one lane during some of the construction process. Due to poor soils in the wetland area north of Ten Mile Road, construction will not be completed for this project until June 2009.

Blue Cross Water Tower Improvements
Project Engineer—Leslie Zawada, P.E. (lzawada@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of the refurbishment of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield water tower and has been completed.

Parking Lot Expansion at the Offices of Lyon Township
Project Engineer—Leslie Zawada, P.E. (lzawada@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of a second entrance to the Lyon Township Hall, which connects to the existing parking lot and township park, and also includes a lower level parking lot, which services the Building Department. The project has been completed.

Lyon Center Drive - Northwest
Project Engineer—Nikki Jeffries (njeffries@giffelswebster.com)

This project consists of the construction of approximately 1,800 linear feet of a new three-lane roadway to extend the existing Lyon Center Drive (near Lowe's) south to Grand River Avenue. A three-legged roundabout will be built at the intersection of Grand River and the new roadway. Water main and storm sewer improvements will also be installed as part of this project. This project has been bid out and was awarded to Dan's Excavating contingent upon the Road Commission for Oakland County's approval and financing in place. Construction is expected to begin in mid-May 2009 and will be completed by October 2009. Grand River Avenue will remain open during construction, but traffic delays should be expected during construction hours.
